General Summary

Mosiac Pathways seeks dedicated, dynamic and experienced people to assist with classroom instruction alongside teachers supporting diverse learners in grades K-8. The ideal candidate will possess a background in education or experience working with children in a professional setting, with an ability to successfully work with the students and faculty to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment that reflects the mission, values and policies of Mosaic Pathways. Support staff must possess an enthusiastic commitment to the importance of building and sustaining a diverse, just, inclusive, and equitable environment.

As part of the Mosaic Pathways' team, support staff are part of school-wide events and activities that are central to students’ experiences and to the school’s culture, including

school play, research projects, and other performances and presentations.

Essential Duties

  • Works in collaboration with the teachers in planning and facilitating the daily program, and providing effective and professional classroom instruction, assessment and management;

  • Works in small groups or one-on-one to support students’ learning;

  • Assumes some responsibility for instruction under guidance of teachers, including preparing materials for lessons, implementing lessons, and attending meetings; 

  • Collaborates in arranging space, setting off materials in the classroom and outdoors to ensure a clean and orderly child-centered environment. This includes notifying the teachers when new materials or repairs are needed;

  • Formally observes children’s activities and progress; documents and shares information regarding children’s experiences with the faculty and staff;

  • Promotes community and fosters social responsibility through multicultural and anti-bias programming and environments;

  • Develops and maintains a supportive rapport with parents/guardians, and facilitates parent/guardian participation in the classrooms; 

  • Helps establish communication structures with parents/guardians that include classroom conferences, portfolio events, weekly newsletters etc;

  • Develops and maintains professional, collaborative and collegial relationships with faculty and staff, as well as with community partners to the benefit of students and classes;

  • Participates in required non-classroom activities including parent/student conferences, faculty meetings, field trips and special activities and performance events;

  • Provides effective supervision of students to promote a safe and healthy environment and school experience; 

  • Supervises students within and outside of the classroom - including lunch, recess, breaks, bathroom;

  • Is knowledgeable of support plans and assists teachers in adapting lessons and activities to meet the needs of all children;

  • Responds to and manages student concerns and issues, collaborating with the teachers and Director when necessary to develop and adhere to student support plans;

  • Attends all trainings, parent-teacher conferences and events, and faculty meetings;

  • Maintains a professional working atmosphere and confidentiality of information in relation to staff, children, families, and co-workers.

  • Helps to maintain school policies, protocols and expectations;

  • Exhibits a growth mindset for professional growth;

  • Completes required reports and tasks in a timely professional manner;

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience in a classroom at the elementary/middle level; experience in independent schools and/or alternative learning environments a plus, but not necessary;

  • Willing to work with and be mentored by current Mosaic Pathways teachers;

  • Methodical and organized;

  • Effective communicator—orally and in writing; excellent social and leadership skills;

  • Proven achievement and performance history of strong student and community relations.

  • Committed to a strengths-based approach to nurturing students’ social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.

  • Competent, compassionate, and flexible in providing a positive and successful environment for all kinds of learners and temperaments including issues of giftedness, gender, race, and learning differences.

  • Advocate for students’ need for play and movement.

  • Non-dogmatic in adherence to specific teaching pedagogies.

  • Love the natural world and a desire to instill that reverence in students.

  • Compassionate, collaborative, and communicative team player.

  • Experienced in (or at least intrigued by) alternative/progressive approaches to education.

  • Excited to seek professional development and educational opportunities.

  • Ability to demonstrate creativity and flexibility;

  • Ability to model honesty, accountability, understanding, tolerance, respect, love and kindness for the students;

  • Ability to multitask, keep calm under pressure, and treat everyone with respect;

  • Displays curiosity, a positive attitude, flexibility and a good sense of humor;

  • Ability to follow all policies and procedures of Mosaic Pathways as written in the private education association member handbook;

  • Demonstrate professionalism, engagement, and kindness to all children and families regardless of race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender and gender identity or expression.

Education and Training

  • High School graduate or Bachelors degree in a relevant field (ex: Education, Environmental Science, Math, English, History, STEM, etc) OR an equivalent experience; teaching certification a plus;

  • Technologically competent, including working knowledge of personal computers, google docs and tablet-based communication apps;

  • Understanding of principles, philosophy, and practices in child development and education;
